Introduction


Chile is a very interesting country! The short history of Chile has shaped its future and how it is today. Chile's geography is in many ways different from any other country in the world. Also people in Chile are mostly desendents from the Spaniards that once lived there. Chile is very uniqe in ways that can not be changed!

History


The original people that lived in the present day Chile were the Inca and Mapuche tribes.
The Mapuche tribe used a form of the word Chili as a bird call. The Inca's also called one of their valleys Chile.
In 1520, the Spanish conquistidor, Ferdidand Magellian discovered Chile.
It was the Spainards who officially called the area Chile, although they probably got the word from the Incas and Mapuche tribe.
It was not untill 1818, when Chile gained its independence from Spain, only 191 years ago!


Geography


Chile is located in southwestern South America.
Chile is a very long and narrow country.
Its borders are between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
Chile's coast is 3 times longer than California's coast.
Chile can even be diverse from itself! Its desert gets 0.5 inches of rain yearly, while its own rain forests get 200 inches of rain yearly (both are average)!


People

People speak Spanish in Chile, because their ancestors came from Spain to form Chile.
Santiago is Chile's capital. It's in midwest Chile.
The population estimate for July 2009 is 16,601,707 people.


Conclusion

As you now know, Chile is an interesting place. Its 191 year history, has had many things happen in it. The geography is the most interesting and diverse thing about Chile. The formerly Spanish people in Chile have interesting things about it too.
