Phyllis Reynolds Naylor was born January 4, 1933, in Anderson, Indiana. Her eyes are green and her hair is brown. She has a husband named Rex and two sons, Jeffery and Michael. Her sons are now grown up and married to Julie and Jeanie. Her grandchildren are Sophia and Tressa. She has an older sister named Norma and a younger brother named John. Though she doesn't have any pets now, when she was growing up she had a springer spaniel and lots of cats.

Phyllis Reynolds Naylor has actually had more jobs than just being an author. Of course she was a mother, but she was also a locker room attendant, a clinical secretary, a typist, a teacher, and an editorial assistant. Some of her favorite things are, the color green, her favorite food is chocolate, her favorite book as a child was Huckleberry Finn, and her favorite book she's written is Unexpected Pleasures. Something else interesting about her is she loves to snorkel.

Phyllis Reynolds Naylor started writing when one of her former Sunday school teachers told her to write a story for a magazine that she was editing. The story was about baseball, and she received a check in the mail for $4.67.She was very thankful for the inspiration and help of her parents, Sunday School teachers, and teachers at school. The first book she had ever written was The Galloping Goat and Other Stories, in 1965 Abington Press. Since then she has written over 115 books, and over 2,000 stories and articles, and has received 10,337 rejection slips.

Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is always paying attention to children. Every time she sees some, she thinks about what they're wearing and what they're doing. One of her quotes say, "When I'm in public, I really pay attention...I'm always listening." After talking to a few readers I found that most of them have read her book Shiloh, a book about an abused dog and an eleven year old boy who tries to save him. Another book by Naylor a lot of them have read is The Grand Escape, a book about cats going on the adventure of a lifetime.

Phyllis Reynolds Naylor has written a great many books. Some of her best known books are the following: the Shiloh series, the Alice book series, The Grand Escape series, and a series starting with The Boys Start the War. She also wrote Night Cry and Bernie Magruder and the Bats in the Belfry. She has received various awards including: a Newberry Medal, two Edgar Allan Poe Awards in Best Juvenile Mystery category. She also received a Child Study Award, a Christopher Award, Society of School Librarians Award along with, Hedda Seisler Mason Award, and Appalachian Medallion, 25 state awards, and various ALA notables. A question that Phyllis has been asked is, "How long will you continue to write?' Her answer is that she'll keep writing as long as she can hold a pencil.
