BALD EAGLES

Introduction

The Bald Eagle, our national bird,is the only bird that is special to North America. The eagle's name states a sea eagle with a white head. At one period of time the word "bald" meant "white" not hairless. Bald eagles are only found in North America, and live in Canada to Alaska to northern Mexico! Around half of the world's bald eagles [70,000] live in Alaska.Combined with Colombia's pop. of about 20,000, makes the northwest part of North America the kingdom for bald eagles. They stay up in the northwest because of the fish they have there, mostly salmon. Dead or dieing fish make a great food source for these birds. Bald eagles are in the same family as the hawks, kites and old-world-vultures.That family is called the Accipitridae family.

Southern Bald Eagle

Scientists divide eagles into groups based on characteristics and behavior. This eagle is a sea or a fish eagle. There are two types of bald eagles. The southern bald eagle is found in the states near the Gulf of Mexico, to Texas, to baja, California, to southern Carolina to Florida, just below the 40 degree north latitude line.

Northern Bald Eagle

The northern bald eagle is found north of the 40 degree north latitude line. The largest number of these eagles is found way up north in Alaska The northern bald eagle is a bit bigger then the southern bald eagle.Studies say that the southern bald eagles can fly into northern states and northern bald eagles can fly into southern states, because of this the subspecies of these two eagles has been discontinued in literature.

Endangered

Bald eagles were declared an endangered species in 1967 in all areas under the 40th paralell line, under the endangered species act. Until 1995 the bald eagle was endangered in 43 of the 48 lower states. In 1995the Wildlife service upgraded the lower 48 stats to thartened. Even though bald eagles are no longer endangered today they are still able to become endangered so protect the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
