Hyenas

by Conner Vinson and Daniel Beaty

What kind of animal has the strongest jaws in the animal kingdom? Surprisingly, a hyena! Most people think that lions or tigers have the strongest jaws. it is not really a proven fact but it is estimated that there jaws are strongest. I mean really would you want to stick your hand in a hyena's mouth to test its jaw strength I know I wouldn't. I'll take the scientist word on this one.

hyenas are hunters and scavengers. When they have a chance to get a dead animal they will take what they can get. But if they must , they will go after their prey and kill it.

They live in Africa. They are quite popular there. They live in mostly semi-desert areas.Hyenas can be found in North America but only in zoos.

When they grow to be adults they have a body length of 22-66 inches and a height of 28-37 inches at the shoulder. The adults weigh 120-189 pounds. When hyenas are first born the weigh only 3.3 pounds. in the wild , hyenas can live to be about 21 years old. In captivity , like the zoo , they can live to be 41 years old.

Determining the gender of males and females can be a difficult task. The reason is because their reproductive organs are alike. When the female hyenas do have an offspring, they are born black. They have 1-5 babies at a time and weigh up to 3 pounds. When they are born they have almost all their teeth and their eyes are open.
