Who wants to skateboard? Well, before you do, you need to know what skateboarding is. Skateboarding is not just something to do. It is an extreme sport. An extreme sport is a sport "that involves high speeds, unusually risky actions, and considerable exposure to physical injuries". The safety gear needed when skateboarding includes helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, shoes, and shirts. These items are used to prevent serious injuries like sprains, fractures, concussions, abrasions, and deaths due to collision with cars and falling from heights.

When should you wear knee and elbow pads? They should be worn when you are skating in a place where you could easily get injured. Injuries could happen anywhere including your driveway, carports, skateparks, sidewalks and streets. That is why you should wear safety gear wherever you are riding. You should also look where there are designated places to ride your board and always stay safe. To stay safe ride with a buddy and stay away from people who cuss and do drugs.external image r?t=a&d=us&s=k&c=akdi&ti=1&ai=30752&l=dir&o=0&sv=0a5c4251&ip=449efd87&u=http%3A%2F%2Fz.about.com%2Fd%2Fskateboard%2F1%2F0%2FJ%2FK%2FNoSkatingJapan.jpg

Before you start to skateboard you will need to have a skateboard and the safety gear decribed above. Beginners do not need to spend alot of money on their first skateboard. You should see if you like to skate first then invest more money into the sport. To choose your first skateboard you will need to know how much you want to skate and where you will riding your board (in your driveway or at a skateboard park). How big of a person you are is important because size matters. One reason is you do not want a board that is twice as big as you are. A good supplier would be your local skateboarding shop or Toys R Us.

There are basic steps to riding your board. First you need to know what foot to put on the board (lead foot). To determine this, walk up a staircase. The foot you put on the step first while walking up the stairs is the lead foot. Now you can get started. Place your lead foot on the front of the board facing in the direction you want to go and use your other foot to push or propel the board forward. When you have reached the certain speed you want to go, place your back foot on the board sideways and move your front foot sideways also. You are now riding the board! When you are beginning you will need to be on a flat or smooth surface. In your skating career you will probably be riding down a sidewalk and come to a crack in the cement. When this happens you should push yourself over the crack with your back foot instead of trying to ride over it. If you ride over and do not push over it, you might fall.

The safest place to skate is a skate park on a sunny, dry day. Skating in the middle of an interstate late at night when it is pouring down rain would not be a good choice. Skating around grocery store parking lots or around the mall is not legal. Always check to see where skating is allowed before riding.
