A softball is made of of cork, yarn, leather, and practically the same material as a baseball. When you see a core of .5 or .6 printed on the outside of the ball it is talking about its a compression rating. The higher the compression the further the ball goes and the harder it is.

When we took 2 softballs of our own and cut them open we found out that they were are actually made with a solid rubber core with a leather or plastic cover!!! We found out on http://www.pennridge.org/p/p-softballmanu.html that the cork and string ball is the old way and the hard rubber core is the new way to make softballs.
Softball was invented in 1887 as an indoor winter sport to keep baseball players in shape. It was called "mush ball", "pumpkin ball, and "cabbage ball because the ball was actually soft. The name softball was not used until 1926. In about 1975 a very hard solid plastic cored ball was used and it was harder than a baseball.
