Family: Violaceae
Genus: Viola
Species: x wittrockiana
height: 6-12" Introduction
Pansies are some of my favorite plants. I think they are pretty because of all of the bright colors. A pansy is a small flower that people grow in their gardens and flower beds. It has five round petals that are normally purple, yellow, or white.
Facts about Pansies
Pansies are fragrant and the blooms are edible. The pansy's ancestor is the viola. The viola has five hundred different species. The viola family includes both pansies and violets. Pansies are most loved for their perky faces and their perfume. The yellow or blue flowers seem to have the strongest scent. Pansies are grown in the South or Southwest in winter and in the North in the summer.
Uses of Pansies
Pansy leaves are edible and high in vitamin A and C. Both the leaves and the flowers can be used as a garnish on cold fruit or cream soups. The flowers are also useful as a dye.
Growing Pansies
1. Plant the pansy seeds early in the winter and cover lightly with 1/8 inch of soil.
2. Planting them indoors will give them a head start.
3. Water them thoroughly once. They germinate (sprout or grow) slowly.
4. Move them to your garden after the last frost. Space them 6 inches apart.
Diseases
It is pretty easy to keep pansies from getting sick with pests or diseases.
Common problems:
Root rot gives pansies yellow leaves and it stops them from growing.
Leaf spot causes leaves to develop spots of red, brown, or yellow.
Mildew- Plants get white powdery spots on leaves and stems. This may cause them to become shriveled and brittle. Place growing plants in area with good air flow to prevent mildew
These diseases are best stopped by prevention. Check plants frequently in warm humid weather because this is when diseases may appear. Avoid overhead watering because this will wet leaves and may cause above diseases.
Fragrance
Pansies have a fragrance that is best to smell in the early morning and in the evening. The yellow and blue pansies have the strongest frarance.
Pests
Slugs, snails and deer enjoy eating pansies. To keep them away from your pansies you can put down sharp gritty sand on top of the soil, or you can also use chipped bark. The flower beds should also be kept clean of leaves and foreign matter. Beer in little bowls buried at the rims in the flower beds will also keep slugs and snails away.
lyric series freedom of bloom and weather tolerance are two qualites of the lyric series . It is availble in five colers, all faced or in a mix. it was bred 1985.
